For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 12/23/15

In reading students will:

  • Students will  know what their book is about by thinking about it when they are finished.
  • Readers can help each other read by looking at the pattern and talking about them.


In writing students will:

  • Students will write using a pattern.                          
  • Writers check for punctuation in their sentences.


In math students will:

  • Classify shapes into categories.
  • The students will identify the positions of all solid shapes using the words above, below, beside, in front of, next to, and behind.

 

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 12/4/15

In reading students will:

  • Students will listen for ending sounds in words
  • Children will add l, h, k sounds and practice writing letters
  • Continue to review sight words.

In writing students will:

  • Students will choose topics for their own pattern books, drawing pictures to support their stories.
  • Writers will use inventive spelling to write one or two tricky words per page



In math students will:

  • Begin module two with shape sorting activities
  • Students will classify shapes into categories

 

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 11/27/15

In reading students will:

  • Students will be note if a book has rhyme or rhythm
  • Readers will begin to figure out tricky words by using beginning sounds
  • Continue to review sight words.    

In writing students will:

  • Students will generate ideas for their own pattern books by making a list
  • Practice writing letters l, h, k


In math students will:

  • Review and practice skills taught in module 1
  • prepare for module 2 with shape sorting activities

Week Ending 11/20/15

In reading students will:

  • Students will be introduced to pattern books
  • Readers will begin to figure out tricky words by using beginning sounds
  • Continue to review sight words.

In writing students will:

  • Students will look for a pattern in books.
  • Recognize that a sentence is a complete thought.


In math students will:

  • Arrange number towers in order from 10 to 1, and describe the pattern
  • Children will decide how to group items and represent the greater number in various ways.

In reading students will:

In reading students will:

  • Children will practice tracking print from a book or a chart  with a pointer.
  • Readers understands that the pictures in a book help us figure out what a setting is.
  • Readers understand that there are characters in a story.

  • Growing writers understand that they can add details to their illustrations.
  • Students understand that we can label our illustrations.





In math students will:

  • Students will compare ways to make ten.
  • Children will find hidden partners of 7-,10.
  • Math students will practice one-to-one matching.

In reading students will:

  • discuss settings in stories
  • identify and talk about the sequence in a story (beginning, middle and end)

  • they will try to write labels for their pictures in writing.
  • students will add background information as a way to tell the story


In math students will:

  • counting to 10
  • make drawings to show 1-10

    In reading students will:

    • the children will prewrite by telling their stories across their fingers to a partner.
    • they will try using visuals in their writing
    • students will talk about things that they want to write about and then sketch some pictures to help them remember.


    In math students will:

    • write numerals 1-5
    • make drawings to show 1-5
    • draw and color to show decomposition of numbers 1-5

    In reading students will:

    • understand that the pictures in a book help us figure out what a story is about
    • discuss three ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words, retell in your own words
    • practice tracking print from a books chart  with a pointer

     

    In writing students will:

    • understand that illustrations are a part of writing
    • understand that writing comes in many forms- that we can write lists, charts, stories,cards...
    • know how to hold a pencil to improve handwriting

      

    In math students will:

    • compare ways to make five
    • find hidden partners of 3,4,5

    • compare the differences between fiction and nonfiction texts

    • celebrate their finished pieces with an author celebration


    In math students will:

    • read,write and relate base ten numbers in all forms
    • count the total value of $1,$10 and $100 bills up to $1,000
    • count from $10 to $ 1,000 on a place value chart and an empty number lines

    Week Ending 10/30/15

    In reading students will:

    • increase their reading stamina by reading for increased periods of time
    • identify the setting of story
    • begin to identify the problem and solution in a story


    In writing students will:

    • continue to use strategies to enhance their personal narratives

    • edit their personal narratives


    In math students will:

    • count up to one thousand on the place value chart
    • write base ten three digit numbers in unit form (for example 143 is 1 hundred 4 tens 3 ones)

    • begin to work with a partner to give and receive feedback about their writing

    • develop estimation strategies for measuring length
    • measure and compare lengths with centimeter rulers and meter tape

    • Growing writers will determine if a topic or idea from their expert list will work for their writing by generating more ideas about the topic using a web
    • Growing writers will categorize ideas into groups to make writing more focused


    In math students will:

    • Count by units of 6 to multiply and divide using number bonds to decompose
    • Count by units of 7 to multiply and divide using number bonds to decompose
    • Continue to study multiplication facts

    Week Ending 11/27/15

    In reading students will:

    • Growing writers choose their topics to publish by thinking carefully about certain criteria such as interest in their topics, strong connection to the moment, and the ability to stay with the topic for an extended period of time
    • Using teacher exemplars, students will be able to distinguish between entries that are worth publishing versus entries that are not


    In math students will:

    • Count by fives and ones on the number line as a strategy to tell time to the nearest minute on the clock
    • Solve word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour by counting backward and forward using the number line and clock
    • Solve word problems involving time intervals within 1 hour by adding and subtracting on the number line

    In reading students will:

    • Growing readers will learn about a character by using text evidence to think critically about what he or she says (dialogue)

    • Growing readers will learn about a character by using text evidence to think about how the character interacts with others



    In writing students will:

    • Writers choose their topic for narrative writing by thinking carefully and thoughtfully about certain criteria
    • Writers identify descriptive language while reading, and incorporate vivid language into their writing
    • Writers use specific verbs to show action in their writing



    In math students will:

    • End of Module Assessment- administer and review
    • Explore time as a continuous measurement using a stopwatch and a number line
    • Relate skip counting by fives on the clock to telling time on a  continuous measurement model: the number line

    Week Ending 10/16/15

    In reading students will:

    • Growing readers use story elements to help them understand stories better
    • Growing readers differentiate between main characters and minor characters in the story
    • Growing readers look at how characters are described on the inside (internal traits), as well as on the outside (external traits)





    In writing students will:

    • Writers recognize and better understand the features of a personal narrative by studying the writing of authors we admire
    • Writers can use their memories and their five senses as inspiration to generate ideas for their writing
    • Writers can utilize different sources of inspiration, such as artifacts, to give us ideas for writing




    In math students will:

    • Apply the distributive property to decompose units
    • Solve two-step word problems involving multiplication and division and assess the reasonableness of answers
    • Solve two-step word problems involving all four operations and assess the reasonableness of answers

    In reading students will:

    • use context clues  to define unfamiliar words
    • notice when meaning breaks down during independent reading, and use strategies to strengthen understanding

    • continue gathering ideas for writing
    • review the writing process (drafting, revising, editing, and publishing)
    • write multiple brief entries so that students will have choices for which piece they will take through the writing process

    • interpret the answer in division as the number of groups or the number in each group
    • use tape diagrams to model and solve multiplication and division problems

    • create wonderings about the Native Americans and read the text to write down the information learned about their wonderings

    In writing students will:

    • revise, edit and publish their literary essays by using peer editing and conferencing


    In math students will:

    • Determine whether a whole number is a multiple of another number.
    • Explore properties of prime and composite numbers to 100 by using multiples.

     

     


    For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

     

    Week Ending 11/25/15

    In reading students will:

    • read to understand what motivates characters to act and react as they do by paying close attention to the characters’ actions
    • compare and contrast similarities and differences between characters of various texts

    In writing students will:

    • continue to take notes and gather ideas about their literary text

    • craft a strong claim or thesis that conveys the big idea they want to prove in their essay


    In math students will:

    • take the mid math module assessment

    East Celebrates PARP Week

    East School celebrated PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) with a "SUPER READERS" theme. The East School PTA kicked off the event with a Scholastic Book Fair, guest readers in all PK-5 classrooms, a BMX assembly to teach the students about resilience, dress up days in which staff and students dressed like Super Mario Brothers characters and more. The students wore mustaches and had a dance party in their classroom and the event ended with students winning a raffle to become Principal for the Day!

    East Students Celebrate Read Aloud Day and Global Play Day

    Students at East Elementary recently celebrated Read Aloud and Global Play Day. World Read Aloud Day recognizes the importance of sharing stories by encouraging students to grab a book, find an audience, and read-aloud. Global Play Day is celebrated by playful learning in the classroom. Students were invited to bring a favorite game or activity to play in the classroom with fellow students.
