Seventeen Long Beach High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students recently had the opportunity to design and teach environmental science lessons to six fourth-grade classes at Lido Elementary School in Long Beach and Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park. The lessons focused on two important environmental topics: water pollution and the greenhouse effect.

To engage the younger students, the IB students developed interactive, age-appropriate activities that helped illustrate how human actions impact the environment and what individuals can do to help protect it. Through discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on learning experiences, the fourth graders explored these issues in a fun, meaningful, and memorable way.

The project provided valuable learning opportunities for both the high school and elementary school students. The fourth graders benefited from learning about environmental science from enthusiastic older peers, while the IB students strengthened their leadership, communication, and teaching skills. They were challenged to break down complex scientific concepts and present them in ways that were both accessible and engaging for younger learners.

In addition to promoting environmental awareness, the project fostered connections between the high school and elementary school communities. By sharing their knowledge and working directly with younger students, the IB participants demonstrated the importance of service, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.
