Long Beach Summer Program Blends English Learning with Fun Activities

For the fifth consecutive year, Long Beach Public Schools successfully hosted its grant-funded English as a New Language (ENL) Summer Program, coordinated by Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certified supervisor Priscilla Edwards. Designed for English language learners in grades K–5, the program enhances language acquisition through immersive, experiential learning. Each week, students explored rich thematic units that culminated in hands-on, real-world experiences.
Highlights of this summer included making homemade ice cream, visiting Maple Lanes Bowling Center and Crossroads Farm, and attending a live production of Frozen at the Professional Youth Theatre. Experiential learning plays a vital role in our students' growth boosting vocabulary retention, confidence, and motivation while fostering authentic peer interactions.
These immersive opportunities broaden cultural and social horizons, enriching each student's educational journey.
