FLEX

Our FLEX (Foreign Language Exploratory) program for our incoming sixth graders provides our students with an opportunity to have a real feel for the foreign language that they will eventually choose to study beginning in grade 7 and beyond. We are offering our incoming sixth graders on an every other day basis a Foreign Language experience where they will be experiencing all 3 languages - French, Italian and Spanish throughout the course of the year. During each cycle, students will be exposed to all language modalities of listening, speaking, reading and writing in that language. A cultural component will also provide our students with a well rounded foreign language experience. The curriculum will be project based and will take into account the various learning abilities of our students. Being that this is an exploratory program, students will either receive a P for passing or an F for failing. We anticipate that all of our students will meet with success as they are exposed to a rich and fun second language experience.

For students in the Dual Language Enhanced program, we also offer a choice. They may remain in the DLEP path, through our Native Language component, or they may choose to explore another language as part of the exploratory program. If they chose the FLEX program, they may choose to do so. However, if during the course of the FLEX program or at its conclusion, the student wishes to return to their DLEP program,  they can do so with the understanding that an assessment will be conducted to make sure that he/she will be able to meet with success.

We believe that through this program our students will benefit from a well rounded experience in the language of their choice, and make a decision based solely on where they feel their language strength would be best met.
