West Elementary School
Welcome to West Elementary School!
Dear West School Families,
My name is Amy Dirolf and I am honored to introduce myself as the new principal of West Elementary School. I am proud to have been selected to join the Long Beach School District. Over the past 17 years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator, creating a positive learning environment for students, teachers, staff, and parents.
My goal is to collaborate with teachers, parents, and students to create a place where all stakeholders feel happy, safe, and appreciated. I began my career as a Teach for America corps member, teaching both fifth and sixth grade in New Jersey. I then moved on to teach fourth grade at Walnut Street School in Uniondale, New York. I loved fourth grade, and enjoyed my extra-curricular endeavors, such as drama club supervisor, site based team member, and coordinator of the L.I.K.E mentoring program! I then became Assistant Principal at California Avenue School. Some of my responsibilities included supervising instruction, and conducting professional development in the areas of restorative discipline and mindfulness. I also worked with student council and the PTA on various events and activities.
On a personal note, I am married with two beautiful children, Isla who is 4 and Dylan who is 3. I am a graduate of Long Beach High School and a lifelong resident of Lido Beach. My parents grew up in Long Beach, and my dad graduated from West School in 1959! My family and I love the beach, traveling, good food, and spending time with family and friends.
I am also excited to welcome Sarah Kugelman as the new assistant principal of West Elementary School. Over the past 11 years, Ms. Kugelman has worked as a teacher and administrator in New York City and Long Island. She began teaching third grade and fourth grade in Manhattan, and kindergarten and first grade in Brooklyn. Ms. Kugelman became an assistant principal where she supported students and teachers. In addition, she helped a newly formed PTA create fun and meaningful events for families.
Ms. Kugelman is also a Long Beach resident. When she is not at work, she can usually be found walking the boardwalk with her family. Her son Will is two and her daughter Addison is two months old. During her free time, she loves to travel, see Broadway shows, and go on outdoor adventures.
Again, I am honored to have been given the opportunity to be part of the Long Beach School District. Over the next few weeks, I will work diligently to connect with you and establish various methods of communication so that you are well aware of the wonderful things that will be happening at West School. I will be working most of the summer at West School, so please feel free to stop by and say hello. I look forward to meeting you and your children, and learning about the West School family.
Ms. Amy Dirolf
