For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 6/10/16

In reading students will:

  • The students will generate a mental image from a fiction and nonfiction text continuing to pay attention to sensory detail.
  • Growing readers sequence the main events in a story by sequentially retelling the story to a partner after listening to a story read by the teacher.

In writing students will:

  • Students will continue writing about times in kindergarten class, using sequential words to build the story and share with classmates.
  • Students will write or draw the word or phrase  from a text that helped you form a mental image.

In math students will:

  • Represent teen number compositions and decompositions as addition sentences.
  • Count across tens by ones to 100 with and without objects.

Week Ending 6/3/16

In reading students will:

  • The students will turn and talk to  partners to ask and answer  questions, review vocabulary and key parts of the story.

In writing students will:

  • Students will begin writing about times in kindergarten class, using sequential words to build the story and share with classmates.


In math students will:

  • Count up and down by tens to 100 with Say Ten and regular counting.
  • Count across tens by ones to 100 with and without objects.

In reading students will:

  • Students will continue to practice speaking audibly and expressing  thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

  • In their writing, the children will describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional details.

In math students will:

  • Represent numbers 20 to 11 in tower configurations decreasing by 1—
    a pattern of 1 smaller.

  • Students will review classroom charts to reinforce writing skills.

In math students will:

  • Count and circle 10 objects within images of 10 to 20 objects, and describe as 10 ones and ___ ones.
  • Count straws the Say Ten way to 20; make a pile for each ten.

In math students will:

  • Students will be able to  decompose to ten, using fingers,  sets, linking cubes, and number bonds.

Week Ending 4/8/16

In reading students will:

  • Students will be introduced to the trick words are, and, to, the, a.
  • Students can focus on the  vocabulary used by the author and
    the purpose of repetition in a story.

In writing students will:

  • Growing writers draft reasons for their opinions to make their opinions stronger.
  • Students will share their opinion and facts about an animal.  They will draw a picture and/or state their opinion and fact about a particular animal.


In math students will:

  • Decompose the number 7 using 5-group drawings by hiding a part, and record each decomposition with a drawing and subtraction equation.
  • Decompose the number 8 using 5-group drawings and crossing off a part, and record each decomposition with a drawing and subtraction equation.

Week Ending 3/18/16

In reading students will:

  • Growing readers think about the purpose of the main character  compared to the whole of the story  by discussing how the story would  be different if the main character didn’t exist.

  • Growing readers identify the  supporting characters by recognizing  that the main characters need help!  Readers ask themselves, “Who is helping the main character?”


In writing students will:

  • Writers form opinions by stating  how they feel about a particular topic.
  • Growing writers make their opinions  stronger by providing specific reasons.   By providing specific reasons another  person will be more persuaded to believe  the way in which you do. 



In math students will:

  • Model decompositions of 6–8  using linking cube sticks to see  patterns.
  • Represent decompositions for  6–8 using horizontal and  vertical number bonds.
  • Represent number bonds with  composition and decomposition story situations.

  • Students continue to blend and read three-sound words. These CVC words begin with any consonant.

  • Represent composition story  situations with drawings using numeric number bonds.

In reading students will:

  • Children will revise their “All About” books by adding color, details, and backgrounds to their visuals.


In math students will:

  • Match and count to compare two sets of objects. State which quantity is less.

In reading students will:

In math students will:

  • Students  will identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than,or equal to the number of objects in another group.

In reading students will:

  • Students will identify the main  topic of a piece of informational/ nonfiction to determine the “gist” of the piece.  
  • Readers determine the key  details of a text once the main  topic has been discovered.

  • Students will practice using alphabetical order and listen to ABC books.
  • Children will continue to focus on writing upper-case (or capital) letters A-P.


In math students will:

  • Students will compare sets using more, less and fewer.
  • Children will identify and create a set that has the same number of objects.

In reading students will:

  • Growing readers recognize unfamiliar words in nonfiction/ informational texts and attempt to  determine the meaning using  strategies.

In writing students will:

  • Growing writers provide a strong conclusion to reiterate their opinions and convince their readers of their argument.
  • Growing writers will continue to record their results and draw conclusions about their science fair topics.


In math students will:

  • Use rectangles to draw a robot with specified perimeter measurements and reason about the different areas that may be produced.
  • Solve a variety of word problems involving area and perimeter using all four operations.

East School celebrated PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) with a "SUPER READERS" theme. The East School PTA kicked off the event with a Scholastic Book Fair, guest readers in all PK-5 classrooms, a BMX assembly to teach the students about resilience, dress up days in which staff and students dressed like Super Mario Brothers characters and more. The students wore mustaches and had a dance party in their classroom and the event ended with students winning a raffle to become Principal for the Day!

East Students Celebrate Read Aloud Day and Global Play Day

Students at East Elementary recently celebrated Read Aloud and Global Play Day. World Read Aloud Day recognizes the importance of sharing stories by encouraging students to grab a book, find an audience, and read-aloud. Global Play Day is celebrated by playful learning in the classroom. Students were invited to bring a favorite game or activity to play in the classroom with fellow students.
