For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 6/10/16

In reading students will:

  • Read and listen to fictional and informational books about frogs.
  • Distinguish which books about frogs are fictional and which are informational by finding text evidence in each book.


In writing students will:

  • Construct and label the life cycle of a frog.
  • Write an  informational report about frogs.


In math students will:

  • Count across tens when counting by ones through 40.
  • Count across tens by ones to 100 with and without objects.

 

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 5/20/16

In reading students will:

  • Review author’s purpose.
  • Read a “just right” book and explain why the author wrote it. (To persuade, inform or entertain.)

In writing students will:

  • Review the different types of writing (patterned writing, informational writing, opinions, narratives) that they have created.
  • Continue choose a type of writing to practice in their journals each day.

In math students will:

  • Count objects the “Say Ten” way up to 20.
  • Make piles for each group of 10 after counting objects the “Say Ten” way.

Week Ending 5/13/16

In reading students will:

  • Listen to and read informational texts to learn about The United States of America.
  • Use text features, in informational texts, to examine symbols and landforms pertaining to The United States of America.


In writing students will:

  • Label symbols and landforms belonging to The United States of America.
  • Write an opinion piece that explains their favorite U.S. symbol.


In math students will:

  • Count and circle 10 objects within counts of 10 to 20 objects.
  • Describe numbers 10 to 20 as 10 ones and ____ ones.

Week Ending 5/6/16

In reading students will:

  • Read and listen to stories about mother’s and Mother’s Day.
  • Look for words to describe the character traits of the characters in the stories that are shared and read.


In writing students will:

  • Write about a special woman in their lives using describing words and character traits.
  • Create portraits that illustrate character traits.


In math students will:

  • Find the number that makes 10 for numbers 1-9.
  • Record the found numbers each with 5-group drawings and addition sentences.

Week Ending 4/22/16

In reading students will:

  • listen to the story The Three Little Pigs and retell the story by acting it out with a group of 4 students.  
  • identify the problems of the story, The Three Little Pigs,  by examining the two phrases: “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down.” and “I’ll come down the chimney and eat you all up.”


In writing students will:

  • recognize that they can share their opinion about various topics.  
  • work with a partner to add to the class opinion chart begun by the teacher.


In math students will:

  • Solve both addends unknown word problems with totals of 9 and 10 using 5-group drawings.
  • Solve take from equations using numbers to 10.

Week Ending 4/15/16

In reading students will:

  • continue to sequence the events of a story using the words first, next, then and finally.
  • continue to read“just right” books and put events in sequential order.


In writing students will:

  • make their opinions stronger by providing specific reasons.  
  • provide specific reasons so that another person will be persuaded to believe the stated opinion.


In math students will:

  • decompose numbers up to 9 and 10.
  • model these decompositions using stories, objects and number bonds.



For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 4/8/16

In reading students will:

  • sequence the main events in a story by sequentially retelling the story to a partner after listening to a story read by the teacher.
  • student will independently read.  Then each student will retell the main points to a partner.


In writing students will:

  • form opinions by stating how they feel about a particular topic.
  • write their opinion on a teacher generated topic on a piece of paper and write down their opinion and draw a picture that corresponds (best/favorite book, author, animal, food, special, etc.


In math students will:

  • decompose the number 6 using 5-group drawings by breaking off or removing a part.
  • record each decomposition with a drawing and subtraction equation.


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 4/1/16

In reading students will:

  • identify who the main character is by answering the question, “Who is the story mostly about?”
  • identify the main character in his/her independent reading book by writing the following response:
    The main character is . . .
    I know this because . . .

In writing students will:

  • distinguish the difference between a fact and an opinion (This may take more than one day).
  • share their opinion and fact about an animal.  They will draw a picture and/or state their opinion and fact about a particular animal.


In math students will:

  • solve word problems up to the number 8.
  • solve put together and total unknown problems using objects and drawings.

Week Ending 3/18/16

In reading students will:

  • determine the key details of a text once the main topic has been discovered.

In writing students will:

  • revise their “All About” books by adding color, details, and backgrounds to their visuals.  
  • continue to share the writing that they have been working on.


In math students will:

  • model and represent decompositions of the numbers 6-8.
  • use linking cube sticks and horizontal and vertical number bonds to represent these decompositions.


 

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 3/11/16

In reading students will:

  • continue to identify the main idea or “gist” of informational texts.
  • continue to look for supporting details when identifying the main idea of an informational text.

In writing students will:

  • create a title that encompasses the main idea/gist of the author’s topic and hooks in their “All About” books.
  • share their “All About” books with their classmates.


In math students will:

  • begin decompositions of 6, 7 and 8 into number pairs.
  • use stories, objects and number bonds to demonstrate decompositions.

Week Ending 3/4/16

In reading students will:

  • identify the main topic of a piece of informational text/nonfiction to determine the “gist” of the piece.  
  • determine the key details of a text once the main topic has been discovered.  

In writing students will:

  • find and gather new and interesting information on their topic that will excite their readers.
  • transfer their written  information from their research to draft and organize their “All About” book.


In math students will:

  • model and represent composition and decomposition of numbers to 5.
  • use actions, objects, drawings and number bonds to demonstrate decomposition and composition of numbers to 5.

Week Ending 2/26/16

In reading students will:

  • ask questions of their texts to clarify (make more clear) their thinking.  This lesson may be taught for two days in a row for deeper understanding.  
  • post-it notes to flag interesting information.

In writing students will:

  • use questions to drive their research.
  • use their research to begin their “All About” book.

In math students will:

  • compose and decompose numbers to 5.
  • use actions, objects and drawings to compose and decompose.

In reading students will:

  • find newly learned information in their nonfiction/informational texts to share with a friend.
  • interact with informational texts to get a deeper understanding of the information being presented.

  • create lists of possible topics to write about to create their own “All About Book”.
  • choose a topic from their list.

In math students will:

  • match and count to compare two sets of objects and state which quantity is less.
  • be familiar with the terms more than and less than.

In reading students will:

  • recognize the elements of nonfiction / informational texts.
  • recognize the different forms of nonfiction/informational texts.

  • recognize the text utilized in an “All About” book and how it gives you information on the topic.

In math students will:

  • identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than or equal to the number of objects in another group.
  • use matching and counting strategies to make these comparisons.

Week Ending 1/15/16

In reading students will:

  • know what pattern books are and why we read them.
  • read a simple pattern book by using the repeated pattern structure and the pictures.


In writing students will:

  • identify the components of a sentence.
  • complete a sentence to create a class pattern book..

In math students will:

  • compare using heavier than and lighter than with classroom objects.
  • compare the weight of an object to a set of unit weights on a balance scale.

Week Ending 1/8/16

In reading students will:

  • Make connections to realistic fiction.
  • Read a “just right” book and decide if it is realistic fiction with the aid of an anchor chart.


In writing students will:

  • Review and practice creating lists.
  • Use their list to write a story.

In math students will:

  • Make a series of longer than and shorter than comparisons.
  • Students will compare lengths of objects using non-standard units of measurement such as string and linking cubes.

Week Ending 12/18/15

In reading students will:

  • make text to text connections. They will connect books they are reading to other books they have read to better understand a story.
  • will compare different versions of the gingerbread man.



In writing students will:

  • understand that lists are written and  used for different reasons
  • will make a list of something they know, like, or are familiar with such as family members or classmates.

In math students will:

  • identify and sort shapes as two- dimensional or three-dimensional.
  • recognize two- dimensional and three-dimensional shapes in different orientations and sizes.

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 12/11/15

In reading students will:

  • retell a story using a logical sequence.
  • use the words beginning, middle and end to retell  a story.

In writing students will:

  • complete a “writing on demand” piece, where they will be given a topic and then asked to write about it using their current writing skills.

In math students will:

  • classify and identify shapes by name. (triangles, rectangles, circles and hexagons)
  • communicate the position of a flat  shape using the words “above”, “below”, “beside”, “in front of”, “next to” and “behind”.`

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 11/13/15

In reading students will:

  • explore the story element, “setting”.
  • look for the setting in a just right book and think about the proof (evidence) that helps them to identify the story setting.


In writing students will:

  • use their background knowledge of letters and sounds to write labels.
  • draw a picture and stretch out sounds within the word to label their pictures.

In math students will:

  • order and match numeral and dot cards from 1 to 10.
  • state “1 more than” a given number.


 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 11/6/15

In reading students will:

  • recognize how to read a book by matching the pictures to words.
  • practice matching  one word to a picture, while independently reading a teacher selected “just right book”. They will focus on saying the beginning sound of the  picture and match the sound to the corresponding letter.


In writing students will:

  • understand that there are different reasons to express their ideas through writing.
  • identify different forms of writing and their purpose (birthday cards, menus, shopping lists).


In math students will:

  • order and write numerals 1-5.
  • represent decomposition with materials, drawings, and equations 3=2=1 and 3=1=2.

 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

 

Week Ending 10/30/15

In reading students will:

  • separate various texts into genre categories by thinking about their features.
  • independently select a Just Right Book and try to identify the genre.


In writing students will:

  • learn how to quickly tell a story across their five fingers. This helps to get the “Juices Flowing” for details that may be included in a story.
  • use the words “First”, “Next”, “Then”, “After that” and “Finally” to create a story in sequential order.


In math students will:

  • compare counts of objects up to the number 8 in linear and array configurations.
  • match sets of objects up to numeral 8.


 


For the week ahead we anticipate that students will...

  

Week Ending 10/23/15

In reading student will:

  • begin to understand “author’s purpose”.  They will identify “author’s purpose” by using the acronym “P.I.E.” (persuade, inform, entertain).
  • read a “just right book” with a buddy and use the words and illustrations to determine “author’s purpose”.

In writing students will:

  • understand how to select a topic to write about that is meaningful to them.
  • utilize their “heart map” that was created as a home/school connection project to aid in their thinking process.

In math students will:

  • count 4 - 6 objects in a circular and scattered configurations.
  • count 6 items out of a larger set.
  • write numerals 1 - 6 in order.

 

 

 


 

Week Ending 10/16/15

In reading students will:

  • recognize how to read a book by matching the pictures to words.

  • Growing readers read texts by “Reading The Pictures”. They can determine meaning by using the picture clues and illustrations.
  • Students are exploring the illustrations in their teacher selected “Just Right Books”

 

In writing students will:

  • Growing writers understand that there are different types of writing. They are learning  that illustrations are a form of writing too.
  • Students are demonstrating this skill as they write/illustrate in their journals.

  

In math students will:

  • The students are finding “Hidden Partners” in 3,4,5 with different configurations.
  • Students are creating  block towers to demonstrate understanding of this concept

Week Ending 6/10/16

In reading students will:

  • 2nd graders are  analyzing  Fairy Tales with the focus on what makes a story a fairy tale?
  • 2nd graders are analyzing the theme and plots in Fairy Tales.


In writing students will:

  • 2nd graders are analyzing the text and features of Fairy Tales and the authors that write them.

In math students will:

  • 2nd graders are working through Module 7 with the focus on graphing, money, and measurement.  

 

Other notes or information:   Remember to log on to RAZ kids and Xtra Math daily.  Remember students can now also participate in Sumdog! Mrs. Allison’s class has Swim until June 17th!!!!  Field Day is Friday June 10th!!!

  • Mathematicians will decompose quadrilaterals to understand perimeter as the boundary of a shape.

Students will review sample answers using a 2 Point Rubric and decide if the requirements were met.
  • Growing writers will respond to texts read by writing short response paragraphs based on a passage. They will use strategies taught and assess their own writing by using the 2 point rubric.

  • Mathematicians will compare fractions with the same numerator pictorially.

Week Ending 3/18/16

In reading students will:

  • Growing readers will know how to use the text features to learn about what they are going to read about. Examples include directions, title, introduction, captions, illustrations, bold print, headings, etc.
  • Growing readers skim and scan texts and questions to get an idea of what the passage is about and to set the purpose of the passage.


In writing students will:

  • Growing writers must read directions carefully when presented with a short response question and create a checklist of all the tasks. They need to circle key words like why, how, what, explain, describe, etc which will aid in grasping an understanding of what type of question is being asked.
  • Growing writers will use a format to help organize a complete short answer response which is usually an inferential question needing support of at least two pieces of evidence.



In math students will:

  • Mathematicians will compare unit fractions with different-sized models representing the whole.

  • be assessed on mastery of  multiplicative patterns on the place value chart with decimal fractions, rounding, and adding and subtracting decimals  (mid-module 1 assessment).

  • multiply a decimal fraction by single-digit whole numbers, relate to a written method through application of the area model and place value understanding, and explain the reasoning used.

Lido students recently took a stand against bullying by celebrating P.S. I Love You Day. The students wore purple and participated in kindness themed activities. P.S. I Love You Day is a non-profit dedicated to eradicating the stigma around mental health.
