Innovation, teamwork, and school spirit were on full display at Lindell Elementary School this March, as 4th and 5th grade students kicked off an exciting coding competition that combined creativity with technology.

The event began with the formation of student teams, each consisting of 3–5 members. Teams selected unique names and designed colorful posters to showcase their group identity and enthusiasm. The initiative not only encouraged collaboration but also set the stage for a high-energy academic challenge.

Students first learned the basics of computer programming using the Blockly app, a kid-friendly platform that teaches coding concepts through block-based visual programming. Once they mastered the fundamentals, they transitioned to the “Go” app, where their new skills were put to the test in a series of fast-paced competitions.

The challenge was structured in a bracket-style tournament, with 4th and 5th grade teams competing within their respective grade levels. Winners of each round advanced until only one team remained from each grade. The grand finale took place in the Lindell gymnasium, where the top 4th and 5th grade teams went head-to-head in a thrilling championship round.

This event is more than just a coding challenge, said Lindell Elementary STEM teacher Halle Conklin. It fosters problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills the students will carry with them well beyond the classroom.

The Lindell community is proud of all the students who participated, and the school looks forward to continuing to spark a love for STEM education in fun and engaging ways.
