Lido Elementary Students Connect with Nature Through Quail Hatching Project

In May, students at Lido Elementary were treated to a unique and engaging science experience as they witnessed the hatching of baby Bobwhite Quails right inside their school. The excitement continued June 2 with a special visit from three ambassador birds, part of an environmental education program designed to foster a deeper connection to nature while supporting local ecosystems.

The quail hatching initiative is part of a broader tick remediation and conservation effort led by the Center for Environmental Education & Discovery (CEED), a Suffolk County based nonprofit. CEED’s mission is to inspire connections to the natural world through discovery, art, and education. The organization reaches people of all ages through conservation projects, school-based programs, and live animal ambassador visits.

Bobwhite Quail, once common on Long Island, have experienced significant population declines due to habitat loss and predation from domestic animals. Their reintroduction is critical to ecological balance, not only do they help manage tick populations through their diet, but their iconic calls also enhance the island’s natural soundscape.

“This program is an incredible example of how students can witness the impact of their environment and their role in protecting it,” said Lido Elementary Librarian Tara Salvadore, who brought the initiative to Lido as part of her graduate studies in conservation education. “My goal is to help students see themselves as stewards of nature and to understand the connections between human actions and the natural world.”

The program is led by CEED naturalist Eric Powers, with support from a dedicated team of educators and volunteers who incubate, hatch, and care for the quail each spring. Once the chicks are strong enough, they move to outdoor pens to develop the survival skills needed for release into carefully selected wild habitats later in the summer.

The June 2 visit from the ambassador birds offered students an up-close opportunity to learn about local species and the importance of wildlife conservation. The event was made even more meaningful by the involvement of Scarlett Friedman, a seventh grader at Oyster Bay High School and daughter of Ms. Salvadore. As the caretaker of the ambassador birds, Scarlett played a central role in the educational exhibit, presenting the birds, conducting Q&A sessions with students, and safely facilitating hands-on interactions.

Through initiatives like this, Long Beach Public Schools continues to promote environmental responsibility and hands-on science learning, empowering students to become active participants in conservation efforts right in their own backyard.

LARC & APT Students Recognized at Recent Board Meeting for Regional, National, and International Awards

Students in Long Beach’s LARC (Learning Activities to Raise Creativity) and APT (Academic Program for the Talented) programs achieved remarkable success in a variety of prestigious competitions at the regional, national, and international levels. These students were recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting.


WordMasters Challenge National Honors

Long Beach LARC students earned impressive accolades in the 2024 WordMasters Challenge™, a national critical thinking competition that tasks students with mastering vocabulary and solving analogies that require both analytical and metaphorical reasoning.

A team of LARC 3rd graders placed 4th in the nation out of 81 teams in the second meet. Contributing to this success were:

Wonder League Robotics International Invitational

Long Beach’s 4th grade LARC Robotics teams qualified for the Wonder League Robotics Competition (WLRC) International Invitational Round, an international challenge with over 8,000 teams from 70 countries. Only the top 12% advance to this round, following five months of intensive, story-based coding and problem-solving challenges.

SIFMA Foundation’s Regional Stock Market Game Success

Two LARC teams earned Top 10 Regional Rankings out of approximately 200 teams in the SIFMA Foundation’s Long Island Stock Market Game:

This financial literacy challenge teaches students to manage a $100,000 virtual portfolio, enhancing their understanding of economics, investing, and personal finance.

Four LARC teams earned Honorable Mention in the Toshiba NSTA ExploraVision Science Competition, placing in the Top 10% of entries across the U.S. and Canada. These projects were recognized for their innovation in solving real-world challenges.

LB Fifth Grade Students Learn from Real Hearings and High School Mock Trials Ahead of Upcoming Competitions

The Long Beach Public Schools’ four fifth-grade Mock Trial teams recently visited the Nassau County Supreme Court for a unique, hands-on learning experience that brought their classroom studies into the real world of law and justice. The trip was highlighted by a special invitation to observe a live courtroom hearing and a personal visit to the chambers of the Honorable Judge Ellen Tobin, a Long Beach parent and longtime supporter of the district’s Mock Trial program.

Judge Tobin graciously welcomed all four teams, representing Lido, East, West, and Lindell Elementary Schools. The Long Beach students had the rare opportunity to witness a real courtroom hearing involving a lively case about asset division. Afterward, Judge Tobin answered questions and personally guided them through the courthouse to observe high school teams competing in their own Mock Trial events, providing valuable insight for the fifth graders as they prepare for their upcoming competitions.

The Long Beach fifth-grade Mock Trial program includes 51 students who have been working in teams, supported by volunteer attorneys helping prepare both prosecution and defense arguments for the case The People of the State of New York v. Noah Gray. These dedicated students will present their cases in competitions at the Nassau County Supreme Court on May 19th and June 3rd.

“Our students were so engaged and enthusiastic about this opportunity,” said Long Beach Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janna Ostroff. “Visiting the court and seeing older students in action was an inspiring moment that gave them a sense of what’s to come.”

The Long Beach program is led by advisors Dana Monti, Caroline Espinet, Dr. Justin Sulsky, and Michael Vasikauskas. Long Beach Students’ Artwork to Fly in Space

Long Beach Public Schools is thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s Mission Patch Design Contest, held in conjunction with the district’s participation in the prestigious Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP). Congratulations go to Zoey Pinto, a 6th grader at Long Beach Middle School, and Murphy Moser, a 5th grader at Lido Elementary School, whose designs have been selected as the official mission patches for this year's spaceflight project.

Their outstanding designs were unveiled and celebrated during the recent Sixth Grade Science Symposium Program, where they received special recognition for their creativity, artistic vision, and contribution to the district’s spaceflight initiative.

As part of the SSEP, Zoey and Murphy’s mission patches will be launched aboard a mission to the International Space Station (ISS), accompanying the 6th-grade science experiment selected to be conducted in microgravity.

The Mission Patch Contest is a tradition that honors the history of NASA spaceflight and gives students a chance to represent their school district’s presence in space. Each patch reflects the spirit of exploration, innovation, and scientific discovery.

Once again, congratulations to Zoey and Murphy for this incredible achievement. We can’t wait to see their patches soar into orbit.
