Congratulations to the talented cast, production staff, stage crew, Wood Club, and Art Club of Long Beach Middle School on the successful spring production of The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza by Don Zolidis.

Students entertained family and friends during performances on April 23 and 24, with the fast-paced and hilarious retelling of classic Greek myths. The production featured two narrators struggling to keep the wildly chaotic stories on track, while incorporating lively audience participation, clever humor, and fun modern pop-culture references that kept audiences laughing from beginning to end.

Long Beach Middle School seventh grader Zoey Pinto has earned first place at the New York State National History Day competition, that was held at SUNY Oneonta on April 26th.

With this outstanding achievement, Zoey has qualified to compete at the National History Day finals in College Park, Maryland this June. Her award-winning exhibit explores the story of the Radium Girls, shedding light on their significant role in advancing labor rights and workplace safety in the early 20th century.

“Zoey’s project exemplifies not only exceptional historical research and presentation skills, but also an understanding of the lasting impact these events have had on modern labor protections,” said Long Beach Director of Social Studies K–12 Rich Rogers. “We are incredibly proud of Zoey’s achievement and wish her continued success at the national level.”

In recognition of Mental Awareness Month, the Long Beach School District organized and coordinated The Banner of Hope Project on Saturday, May 2, along the Long Beach City Boardwalk. The initiative brought together students, educators, and community leaders in a shared effort to promote messages of inspiration, love, kindness, and empathy.

The project was the vision of Long Beach Board of Education Trustee Anne Conway and invited students from Long Beach High School and Long Beach Middle School to use their voices and creativity to uplift the community. Under the guidance of Kristen Ford, Wellness Center teacher at Long Beach High School, and Caroline Espinet, teacher at Long Beach Middle School, students designed and created a series of inspirational banners. These banners are now proudly displayed along the boardwalk for residents and visitors to experience throughout the months ahead.

The event was attended by members of the Long Beach City Council, City Manager Dan Creighton and County Legislator Patrick Mullaney, who joined Long Beach Schools Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher and Long Beach High School Principal Dr. Andy Smith. Trustee Anne Conway, along with participating students and staff, gathered to celebrate the meaningful impact of the project and its message.

“The Banner of Hope Project reflects the strength and compassion of our students,” said Conway. “Their voices remind us of the importance of supporting one another and prioritizing mental wellness in our community.”

This initiative was made possible through the generous support of community donors, including Tracey Fontaine, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Michael Diamond Foundation, the G2H Foundation, and the Michael Berube Foundation.

Long Beach Middle School is proud to announce that sixth-grade students Caylee Donaghy, Rowan McLaughlin, Grayson Eichin, and Jackson Ferraro have been recognized for their innovative STEM project, the SeroScanner, developed as part of the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition. Their work highlights exceptional creativity, scientific curiosity, and a strong commitment to solving real-world challenges through forward-thinking innovation.

The Long Beach Middle School team was named Regional Champions in the prestigious competition for their outstanding project. Out of thousands of entries submitted from across the United States and Canada, only 24 teams are selected as regional winners earning these Long Beach students a place among the nation’s top young innovators.

Through their participation in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition, students engaged in a rigorous research and development process that emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and scientific inquiry. The program encourages young innovators to imagine future technologies while building essential STEM and problem-solving skills.

The students were honored during a celebratory assembly held at the school on April 21. Representatives from Toshiba Business Solutions joined students, families, teachers, and administrators to present awards and extend their congratulations.

Their project, the SeroScanner is a conceptual, customizable bracelet designed to utilize future nanotechnology to monitor key brain chemicals associated with mood and overall well-being. By tracking and potentially adjusting levels of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, the device aims to support individuals facing mental health challenges. Envisioned as secure, refillable, and wearable, the SeroScanner represents a promising step toward more accessible, personalized, and proactive mental health care solutions.

During the assembly, the team presented their project video to peers, families, and school leadership. “This is a tremendous achievement for our students and our school,” said Walter Kramme, Long Beach teacher and project advisor. “Their hard work, imagination, and collaboration truly helped get them to this stage of the competition.”

The students will now advance to the national round, where they will compete for the title of National Champion. The entire school community wishes them continued success on their exciting STEM journey.

Congratulations to Caylee, Rowan, Grayson, and Jackson, and special thanks to Mr. Kramme for his dedication and guidance.
