Long Beach Middle School is proud to announce that sixth-grade students Caylee Donaghy, Rowan McLaughlin, Grayson Eichin, and Jackson Ferraro have been recognized for their innovative STEM project, the SeroScanner, developed as part of the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition. Their work highlights exceptional creativity, scientific curiosity, and a strong commitment to solving real-world challenges through forward-thinking innovation.
The Long Beach Middle School team was named Regional Champions in the prestigious competition for their outstanding project. Out of thousands of entries submitted from across the United States and Canada, only 24 teams are selected as regional winners earning these Long Beach students a place among the nation’s top young innovators.
Through their participation in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition, students engaged in a rigorous research and development process that emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and scientific inquiry. The program encourages young innovators to imagine future technologies while building essential STEM and problem-solving skills.
The students were honored during a celebratory assembly held at the school on April 21. Representatives from Toshiba Business Solutions joined students, families, teachers, and administrators to present awards and extend their congratulations.
Their project, the SeroScanner is a conceptual, customizable bracelet designed to utilize future nanotechnology to monitor key brain chemicals associated with mood and overall well-being. By tracking and potentially adjusting levels of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, the device aims to support individuals facing mental health challenges. Envisioned as secure, refillable, and wearable, the SeroScanner represents a promising step toward more accessible, personalized, and proactive mental health care solutions.
During the assembly, the team presented their project video to peers, families, and school leadership. “This is a tremendous achievement for our students and our school,” said Walter Kramme, Long Beach teacher and project advisor. “Their hard work, imagination, and collaboration truly helped get them to this stage of the competition.”
The students will now advance to the national round, where they will compete for the title of National Champion. The entire school community wishes them continued success on their exciting STEM journey.
Congratulations to Caylee, Rowan, Grayson, and Jackson, and special thanks to Mr. Kramme for his dedication and guidance.
