At the January 14 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Gallagher began her report by introducing Long Beach Director of Literacy Jennie Hoffman who presented this month’s student showcase which featured a Long Beach Elementary Student Writing Showcase.
Thirteen students ranging from Pre-K to fifth grade presented various writings which included goals for the new year, how to books and personal essays written in their respective classes. As each of the students read, Ms. Hoffman shared the types of writing each class was focusing on such as narrative, informational or an argument. As well, she highlighted lifelong practices of writing throughout the program such as think, read, speak, and listen to support writing, write for multiple purposes, including for learning and for pleasure and strengthen writing by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach to name a few.
The various topics students wrote about included, The Snowy Day, How to Make a Bed and Why Fast Food isn’t Good for You.
In addition to the Writing Showcase, Long Beach Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Mike DeVito shared a presentation about Initial Budget Foundation and Bond Proposals.
